Leadership - Haepapa and Kahurangi

Pride Lines and Alphabet Dancing

Today the Leadership group looked how pride can be useful to a leader and how pride can also sabotage.  The students spent time thinking about, and sharing, a variety of things that they can be 'positively proud' about.

Then we had a lot of fun playing 'Alphabet Dancing'.  Just telling them the name of this activity provoked a spontaneous outburst of 'YMCA'  from many students, which had everyone giggling before we had even begun!  The aim of the game is for leaders to direct their teams to spell certain words.  A lot of leadership factors came into play as our  team leaders found out how much giving clear directions, repeating information, not leaving anyone behind and being able to actually complete the task (spelling correctly), could impact on their team's success.

TOM Student Workshop

A huge thank you to the GATE students and their families who worked to get to the students to their Tournament of Minds Student Workshop.  This event was held at Ross Intermediate on Saturday, June 10th.

Students met with 100 others from Year 5 to Year 10, and explored a range of TOM activities.  In small groups, they tackled 20 'scattergories' type brain teasers.  They also had to create either a sciences or arts human sculpture, which represented the strengths of a fictitious school they were establishing.  Finally, teams had to practice their presentation skills, use of the square and dramatic elements, by retelling a nursery rhyme but incorporating in these other dimensions.  Our teams both created some effective retellings of 'Baa Baa Black Sheep', adding in a detective and a little bit of song and dance!  It was a fun event, with lots of skills practiced.

Here are some photos from the morning...

Haepapa / Kahurangi Leadership

Leadership Lessons #2

Students met with me today to investigate and reflect on the qualities of a good leader - the students recorded their reflections on the Explain Everything slideshows - they make for interesting dinner time conversation!

Then we moved on to Knee to Knee, a confident communication task requiring students to introduce themselves and clearly respond to a question, listening also to their partner's response.  The students recorded their feelings about the exercise before and after and made interesting observations that prompted lively conversation.

Ava

Before:  I feel weird because I am very nervous in front of a group and go all shy.
After:  I felt really good but it did feel weird like I said.  But, it was nice to know more about others.

Aidan

Before:  I feel odd because I don't like introducing myself.
After:  I started to feel a bit better.  I felt a bit less odd.

Greta

Before:  I feel confident because I have introduced myself to a lot of family friends.
After:  It was easier introducing myself with the girls that it was with the boys.

Prya
Before:  I feel confident because I like to have a bully free environment and having friends is a perfect way because I can see what people are doing and see if people are being bullied or they are bullying people.
After:  It was just the way I planned.
