End of Year Celebration and Otago Maths results

So great to celebrate the end of a busy year on Thursday with our pizza lunch and certificate presentations.

For the first time I decided to award "Leavers Certificates" - some of the students moving on have been involved with me for many years and others I also taught as 5 year olds!

6 Years!!

It was also great to recognise the efforts of our Otago Maths competitors.  Special mention goes to Jensen, Max and Callum for earning Merit and Josiah for earning Excellence.  Josiah also achieved amongst the top students in the country and recieved a $25 book voucher.

We held our own school Grand Final in lieu of the OMPS national final and the results were 2nd equal: Jake and Jensen and 1st place, Josiah.

Great effort! Happy Holidays!

Active gratitude and escape room planning

All year we have practiced active gratitude! It's a great way to get to know the kids interests and it's funny how they create their own 'in jokes' when practicing something like this ....'Russian Fudge' became an essential element, needing constant affection from Kahurangi boys!

Our escape room planning occurred over several weeks. The students really thought about their story arcs and worked well to fit their puzzles to their theme. Some great teamwork shown and as you'll see in the next post, some real dedication to their plot lines was shown!

Escape Rooms at the City Library

I was so lucky last Thursday to be able to take the Whakaaro students from Te Urungi to the Palmerston North City Library. Waka Curd, the Digital Technologies Librarian wrote a brand new Escape Room scenario for us called 'The Mentalist Mansion'. He used all our favorite things; treasure hunts, magic tricks, robots and secret codes! It was really fun for all the groups and gave them a great starting place for designing their own scenarios.

Whakaaro Week 3

Spy missions, escape rooms and construction are all on the agenda for this week. Our Kahurangi students undertook missions for the Kids Spy Network, solving puzzles and clues to achieve their missions. Heads were down concentrating the whole time!

The youngest Whakaaro members built a chair and added to their teamwork brainstorm. We talked about tone of voice when talking to team mates and the difference it makes when you speak kindly to one another in a pressure situation.

Great teamwork all round. Can the Navigator Centre fair as well on Thursday, when they tackle 'The Mentalist Mansion' escape room on our trip to the City Library??
