Epro8 Senior Teams

Escape Room Challenge

Following on from the Technology Terrors last Tuesday,  on Wednesday, The Whakarongo Figure-it-Outers attempted the same challenge and beat the clock by 5 minutes (compared with the 2mins of the year 5/6 team) . But then the Whakarongo Slingshots arrived and blew the clock away finishing with 20 minutes left on the clock - a stellar effort, and lots of fun!  They were so quick, I forgot to take photos till the end!!

Navigator Centre / Kahurangi / Haepapa

Tournament of Minds

Our TOM teams met together today to begin our preparation for this fantastic event next term.  We talked about team dynamics and then got stuck into breaking down a challenge.  Learning to really read and understand the challenges is a crucial part of being viable competitors in the Long Term Challenge categories.

Who's At My Table?

A group of students from Haepapa and Kahurangi began a new GATE initiative today, looking at Leadership.  This will run over the remainder of the term and will give the students a chance to explore their own leadership strengths and weaknesses, and develop areas further.

Today we looked at the elements of good leadership - here are some of the ideas the students could identify:

A Good Leader is:

We also talked about the kinds of leaders we have in our lives and then, like a Board of Directors is made up of people with different strengths to guide and support a company, we have our own leadership support 'at our table'.

Students identified some of the leadership influences they have access to 'at their table' and shared with each other about their traits.  It was a great lead into our sessions.

Technology Terrors - Kahurangi

The Technology Terrors take on the Escape Room!

The Technology Terrors were the first to attempt the Escape Room at the Palmerston North City Library.  Event Co-ordinator Waka Curd had created a number of challenges for the team to solve, clues to find and codes to crack.  The team put their collaborative work skills into practice and managed to solve the challenge scenario with 5 minutes to spare on the clock.  Great Fun!

Epro8 Challenge Regional Grand Final

Epro8 Teams.

Wow!  What a great week of competition.  The Whakarongo Slingshots showed perseverance and resilience in their Grand Final competition and finished 9th on the night.  Well done to Axis, Emma, Indi and Flynn!

Wednesday morning showed the Technology Terrors facing their fellow competitors at Monrad Intermediate.  This team gave us a stressful time in the audience as the team raced against the clock and with just seconds to go, were able to complete a challenge and move up the points table to come in 2nd place overall.  Well done to Caleb, Maddi, Riley and Hunter!

Semi Finals Success!

Kahurangi and Navigator

Epro8 Challenge Semi Finals

What a terrific week!

The results achieved by all of our competing Epro8 Challenge teams this week has been fantastic.  Schools from Palmerston North, Dannevirke and Whanganui, designed solutions to a range of really challenging problems.  The students had to draw on prior knowledge, strategy, and above all, teamwork to create their structures and machines.

It must be acknowledged how very well the students worked under the pressure of the competition clock.  To remain focused and to show resilience when ideas don't pan out, is a huge thing and these students showed very sophisticated levels of perseverance.  Well done teams!

The final results are as follows:

The Whakarongo Figure-it-Outers placed 6th equal
The Whakarongo Slingshots placed 5th

And...

The Whakarongo Technology Terrors placed an amazing 1st - winning their division and taking home the trophy which will be displayed in the school foyer.

The Slingshots and the Technology Terrors will move forward to the Manawatu-Whanganui Regional Final in Week 3 of this term.    Congratulations on a very fine effort everyone!
